Violet Brokken, 97

CRESCO - Funeral services for Violet Brokken of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Violet, 97, died Monday, January 5, 2009 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.

Violet Brokken was born September 16, 1911 in Cresco, IA the daughter of Albert and Olga (Walter) Bigalk. She was baptized and confirmed in Zion United Methodist Church north of Cresco. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1929. Violet taught in rural one room schools for 10 years, including the Oakley School, which happened to be the same school that her father Albert and his brothers also attended.

On June 14, 1939 she married Orlando Brokken and they farmed near Harmony, MN for 25 years, later moving to Cresco. Orlando passed away on November 28, 1975. She then lived on her own in her little red house until the age of 96 when she entered the Cresco Care Center.

She is survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers: Manly and Delbert.
