George Schmitt

George Schmitt, 91, of Cresco, died Wednesday, March 10,1999, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 12, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco, with the Rev. Michael Tauke officiating.

Marilyn Novak was the organist. Pam Daley was the cantor.

Casket bearers were George Hackman, Duane Franzen, David Busta, Mark Hackman, Linus Franzen and Kenneth Kuhn.

Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

George Edward Schmitt was born March 18, 1907, in St. Lucas, the son of John and Anna (Meyer) Schmitt. He attended school in St. Lucas and left home after graduating from 8th grade in 1921.

He worked as a hired man on several area farms until his marriage.

On Oct. 3, 1932, he married Emma Busta at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson. To this union three sons and one daughter were born.

He and his wife farmed outside of Ridgeway from 1932 until their move to Cresco in late 1949. They farmed south of Cresco until his retirement in 1969. He remained living on the farm till the summer of 1998. He then went to live in a nursing home due to his age and failing health.

Survivors include his son, Dale Schmitt of Sedona, Ariz.; four grandchildren, David Cotant Jr. and Craig Cotant, both of Cresco, Brian Schmitt in the United States Air Force stationed in Germany, and Rachel Schmitt of Sedona, Ariz.; and five great-grandchildren, all of Cresco.

George Schmitt was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1978; an infant son, Delbert; a son, Dorian; an only daughter LaDeane (Schmitt) Cotant; a grandson, Shawn Cotant; one brother, Joseph in infancy; four sisters, Rose Franzen, Elizabeth Schmitt at age 5, Clara Franzen and Mathilda Hackman; four half-sisters, Bertha Lusson, Marie Kipp, Elizabeth Schauferibuel and Mary Wurzer; and one half-brother, Jacob Schmitt.
