Obituary
Horetta Mae Austin was born November 23, 1864, at Spring Valley, Minn., the daughter of Horatio and Lucy Ann (Wells) Austin. Her father, fighting with the Union forces in the Civil War, was killed before she was born.
She attended school and spent her early girlhood in Spring Valley, Minn., and later became a school teacher in the rural schools of that vacinity. Later she went with her mother to Kansas and taught in the schools of that state.
She was married on July 4, 1882 to Frederick Elmer Lawson, of LeRoy, Minn., where they made their first home. They came later to a farm near Chester and her home has been continuously in this locality with the exception of eight years spent in Fayette.
To this union were born ten children, five of whom have preceded the mother in death.
She is survived by her husband, four daughters, Valerie A. Brown, of Highmore, SD., Gladys J. Truax, of Mystic, SD., Hazel E Cornell of Phoenix, Ariz., Freda H. Vierth, of Albia, and one son Lyall A. of Chester.
She was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Royal Neighbors lodge.
