HOWARD COUNTY TIMES
Fred Elmer Lawson, the youngest son of William and Hannah Lawson was born at Sheboygan, Wis. July 1, 1862. He passed away at Chester, Feb. 23, 1934, at age 72.
The family came to Fillmore County, Minn., when he was 13 years of age and located on the place where Duane Bonner now lives. He has lived in this community ever since with the exception of eight years in Fayette, Ia.
On July 4, 1883, he was united in marriage with Retta Mae Austin who preceded him in death last year.
The surviving children are: Valerie Brown, Highmore, SD. Gladys Trueax, Edgemont, SD., Hazel Cornell, Phoenix, Ariz., Freda Vierth, Waterloo, Ia., and Lyall Lawson, Chester, 14 grandchildren, and an aged sister.
Mr. Lawson was an old settler of this community and witnessed many changes that transformed a pioneering country into a well settled region. He grew up with the community and had a deep and loyal interest in its progress and development. It was fitting that his last days should have been spent here.
For a man of his age he was unusually well posted on the affairs of the day and enjoyed discussing current events in friendly arguments.
He was a great admirer of Pres. Roosevelt and ready to champion his policies at every opportunity. He was genial and friendly, possessed a good sense of humor, which enabled him to discuss these questions without losing his temper or creating hard feelings.
The people will miss his presence among them and regret his untimely passing from their midst. His death reminds us again of this passing parade of life, and how slight is our grasp on the slender thread of life. God holds the keys of life and the grave, and the doors may open and shut by his decree; but none of us can guess the moment.
