Elmer Lyle, youngest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hardy, was born at Cresco, Iowa, May 29, 1889, and there he resided until at the age of eighteen he went to Dakota and made his home for about two years with his brother, W. C. Hardy, on his homestead.

Returing from Dakota the two brothers enlisted in the United States navy, Elmer serving for four years on the "New Hampshire" and receiving an honorable discharge, with highest credits, on Dec. 16, 1912.

Very shortly after this he came to Riceville and began work in the Schultheis garage, later going into the same business for himself, which he conducted successfully and skillfully up to the time of his last brief illness.

On October 25, 1916, he was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Burke of this place, with whom he lived in happy companionship for but two brief years, when his life work was suddently terminated after about ten days illness with influenza followed by pneumonia complications.

Loved ones, doctors and nurses did all in human power for his restoration to health, but he passed to his reward on Thursday, Dec. 19, 1918.

Besides the bereaved wife, he is survived by his father, Thomas Hardy of Cresco, one brother and two sister, Verne Hardy and Mrs. Grace Jensen of Cresco, and Mrs. A. W. River of Riceville.
