From the Scrapbook of Newspaper Articles by Mrs. Lillian Wheeler

James A. Crittenden was born in Poultney, Vt., March 8, 1823, and died in Cresco, Iowa, Jan. 5, 1914.

He was married to Lucy W. Jennison at East Swanton, Vt., Jan. 28, 1851. Three children were born there. The first passed on early. The other two came with them to Iowa in 1857. The family located temporarily in Jenkins Township, Mitchell County. Here Josie passed away suddenly. February, 1859, another came to cheer their lot.

Later a home was started on the prairie eastward, in Oakdale, Howard County. In this home one room was used for public school, several terms.

Into the home during the passing years came three children--Hattie, now Mrs. Chas. Fields of Cresco, with whom her parents have lived several years, "loving and being loved, blessing and being blessed"; Lauriston T., of Rapid City, South Dakota, and George, a frail child who passed away after brightening their lives two years. These, with Sandord H. of McIntire and Mrs. Lewis Cutting of North Yakima, Washington, survive their father.

After leaving the farm, Mr. and Mrs. Crittenden moved to Riceville, where they gathered many new friends about them and where the friends of earlier days delighted to call on them.

It was a real grief to all when it became necessary they should leave Riceville.

A passage of scripture suggested itself as a true picture of our friend who has been warmly welcomed on the Other Shore, "The hoary head is a crown of glory if it be found in the way of righteousness."
