James J. Smith was born March 29, 1864, near Watertown, Wis., and died at his home near Acme, Iowa, Sept, 28, 1913.
At the age of six years he came with his parents to Howard County, Iowa, which place has since been his home.
He was united in marriage to Miss Anna Heller, of Riceville, on Jan. 14, 1892. This union was blessed with four children Harry B., William E., James T. and Esther M., all of whom with his dear wife survive him. He also leaves to mourn his loss two brothers and two sisters; Michael of Elma, Iowa; Thomas of Denver, Col., Mrs. R. Echart of Waterloo, Iowa, and Mrs. M. Snavely of Mission, Texas. Thomas and Mrs. M. Snavely were prevented from attending the funeral by not being able to reach here in time. He will be missed very much by all of these and a host of friends and neighbors.
Mr. Smith was a devoted husband, loving father and a kind neighbor, ever ready to help another in any way. He has been a great sufferer for years. All that medical aid and kind and loving hands could do to alleviate his sufferings was done.
He was consoled during the last weeks of his illness by the frequent visits and words of comfort of his beloved pastor, Rev. Father O'Brien. Being fortified by the last rites of the Catholic church, he peacefully passed away.
His funeral was held from the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Riceville on Sept. 30th, the services being conducted by Rev. J. J. O'Brien, who gave a very befitting sermon.
Interment in Mt. Calvary cemetery.
IN MEMORY--
A precious one from us has gone
A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled
God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon His love had given
And though the body slumbers here
His soul is safe in heaven.
