Wednesday, February 13, 1907 occurred the death of Thomas Smith of Acme, Iowa. Thomas Smith was born in Dublin, Ireland, April 24, 1824, and came to America in his early youth. In 1857 he was married to Mary Ann Shanley and they settled near Watertown, Wisconsin, from whence they moved to Howard county in 1870, and have since resided here. Mrs. Smith preceding him to the other shore February 14, 1903. This union was blessed with eleven children, five dying in early childhood. Four sons and two daughters survive him; Michael of Elma, Wm. of North Dakota, Elizabeth Snavley of Oelwein, Mary Eckert of Marshalltown, Thomas of Walton, Kansas, and James of Acme, with whom the deceased made his home.

Mr. Smith joined the Catholic church August 11, 1899, and was a faithful member until death.

He was always willing to aid his neighbors by word of council or an act of kindness and was a kind husband and loving father and good neighbor.

Funeral service was held from the Catholic church in Riceville, Rev. Father O'Brien conducting the services and the body was laid to rest in Mount Calvary cemetery.
