Edgar Groat was born at Whitby, Canada, East, March 12, 1830. He was married to Miss Almira Still Nov. 15, 1851, and they moved to Wisconsin in 1854, then again moved to Iowa, Jones county January 1865; settling in Howard county in 1877.

He died March 20, 1907, at the age 77 years 8 days, of apoplexy at the home of his daughter with whom he has made his home for the last three years. He is survived by this daughter, Mrs. E Holston, of Riceville, and two other children, E. W. Groat of Springfield, Mo., and A. L. Groat, Oklahoma City, Okla., ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren besides four sisters. He was laid to rest by the side of his wife, who died January 28, 1898, in Elma cemetery, Rev. A. K. Lewis officiating at the funeral services.
