He was married to Eunice Samantha Spencer, at Center, LaFayette county, Wisconsin, October 23, 1851. They moved to Jamestown township, Howard county, Iowa, in June, 1855 and settled on the place now owned by Mr. Curtis at Round Grove. During the time occupied in building his log house they camped under a large tree. His wife died June 9th, 1857, leaving two children. Some time after Mr. Patterson returned to Wisconsin where he had relatives living. He was united in marriage to Jennie Melissa Edwards, December 31st, 1859 and the following spring moved back to his Iowa home. In the winter of 1864 while hauling grain to McGreagor he met some parties who were making up a company to go to the gold fields of Idaho and Montana. In the spring he, with his brothers Benjamin and Jesse Patterson joined the company and went to the far west where he remained about eighteen months. In 1886 having sold the old homestead, he moved to Montana, after residing there a few years he moved to Pasadena, California, hoping the change of climate would benefit his wife who had been in poor health, but she continued to fail until February 16th,1904 when she passed away. During the last year he lived with his children in Montana. He leaves nine children, B. B. Paterson of Browerville, Minnesota, Mrs. Lillian Wheeler of Riceville, David, Clarence, Charles, & Harry and Mrs. Irene Perks, Mrs. Blance Campbell and Mrs. Jennie Davidson of Montana. Dr. Patterson accompanied his father's remains to Pasadena for interment. Mr. Paterson was converted early in life and united with the M. E. church in which he usually held position of responsibility and trust. He helped generously with his means in building the old M. E. church at Riceville and in carrying on the work of the gospel.
