You might try looking into any records from the Cookes-Lunning Funeral home. Those records will usually tell you the disposition of the body.
From the data in the obit, it seems as if all of his family lived away from him with the exception of one sister. Very often in those situations, it is out of sight out of mind, and time passes and no one takes care of getting a stone to mark the grave. The only person that seemed to live close by was a sister in New London, Iowa and perhaps she did not have the money to make sure a stone was erected.
Another possibility is that the stone may have been damaged or fell over and grass has grown over it. I have found this in some of the older stones and even with some of the newer flat bronze stones. The grounds get tended and mowed regularly and the grass with enough water will just cover the marker and you won't be able to see it.
You should be able to check with the cemetery to find out the location of the grave and then if a marker has not been placed you could probably have one put in. Did he serve in the military? If so he might be entitled to a headstone from the federal government. Just a thought...
