Ann Long and Thomas Garside were married in Hughes County in or near New London in December of 1854. They adopted a daughter who was born in June of 1861.
The story that was passed down to family was that they adopted a niece of Ann's who had been orphaned. I was hoping that the newspapers of the day could offer more information.
