Charles Avery Sr.
Charles J. Avery Sr., 78, of Burlington, died at 7:55 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at Donnellson Health Center.
Born Dec. 17, 1926, in Henderson County, Ill., he was the son of Joseph and Nellie Wolford Avery. On March 27, 1948, he married Edith Maxine McIntyre in Gladstone, Ill. She died Oct. 7, 2004.
Mr. Avery worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and General Electric.
He was a World War II Army veteran. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting. He was an avid Hawkeyes fan.
Survivors include three daughters, Melody Ferguson of Kennewick, Wash., Sharon Carter of Houston and Charlene Johnston of Camdenton, Mo.; three sons, Charles Avery Jr. and Richard Avery, both of Burlington, and William Avery of Salem; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Lee Avery of Media, Ill.; one sister, Shirley Furniss of Media; and 14 nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, four brothers and one sister.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel.
The graveside funeral for Mr. Avery with military rites conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 9162 and 10102, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League and AMVETS Post 29 will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Randall Gearhart officiating.
A memorial has been established for Donnellson Health Center.
