Harold H. Van Syoc, 83, of New London, died at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born April 26, 1922, in Mount Union, he was the son of Elmer Lemon and Nellie R. Cady Van Syoc. On Jan. 12, 1947, he married Lucille Alice Schmidt in Burlington. She died July 15, 2005.
Mr. Van Syoc was a farmer, auctioneer and real estate broker. For 14 years he co–owned and operated Middletown Sale Barn.
He was a 1939 graduate of New London High School. He was a World War II Army veteran, where he served in Japan. He was a pioneer in selling real estate at public auction. He was a member of New London United Presbyterian Church, National Association of Realtors, Iowa Association of Realtors, National Auctioneers Association, Iowa Auctioneers Association, where he was president in 1968 and man of the year in 1980, and New London Masonic Lodge. He was on the board of directors for New London Co–op and Mount Pleasant Bank & Trust. He won the auctioning contest at the 1972 Iowa State Fair. He loved to go to auctions after he retired and enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include one son, Randy Van Syoc of Round Top, N.Y.; two daughters, Sherry Jones of New London and Sandy Griffin of Danville; six grandchildren; five great–grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
The joint funeral for Mr. and Mrs. Van Syoc will be at 2 p.m. today at New London Christian Church, with Pastor Sue Tomlinson officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by New London Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7641 will be in Burge Cemetery in New London.
Memorials have been established for New London Fire and Rescue, Danville Fire and Rescue and New London Presbyterian Church.
