DEATHS

Alma E. Van Allen, long time resident of Mt. Pleasant, died at the Mercy hospital in Iowa City Tuesday morning following a brief illness.

Mrs. Van Allen was born on a farm near Dudley, Iowa, on May 15, 1884, to James Henry and Martha Eyre Olney. She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College and then taught in the country schools near her home until her marriage in Ottumwa to Alfred Morris Van Allen on June 14, 1911. Mr. and Mrs. Van Allen made their home in Mt. Pleasant at 502 West Washington Street. Mr. Van Allen, an attorney, and a native of Mt. Pleasant, was a city councilman and member of the school board for many years and later mayor, dying in September, 1945.

Mrs. Van Allen served on the governing board of the Mt. Pleasant Public Library and was honored by Iowa Wesleyan as Mother of the Year in 1958. She was a member of Original Chapter A of the P.E.O. sisterhood and of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are three sons, Dr. James and Dr. Maurice of Iowa City and William, now living in London, England, and 16 grandchildren. Her oldest son, George, an attorney and later chief judge of the district court of Henry, Louisa, Des Moines and Lee counties, preceded her in death in 1968.

Services will be held in First Presbyterian church, Mt. Pleasant, on Thursday, August 13, at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Q. Gerald Roseberry, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be at Forest Home cemetery.

Friends may call at the Crane, Ewart, Young Funeral Home.
