Beatrice Thomes
Beatrice Eloise Thomes, 92, of New London, died at 4:25 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at New London Nursing & Rehab.
Born Feb. 3, 1908, in Agency, she was the daughter of Charles Franklin and Estella May Hale Baker. She married Verdon "Bill" Thomes on Aug. 7, 1929, in New London.
Mrs. Thomes was a 1926 graduate of New London High School and received her teacher's training at Cedar Falls. She taught at Leetown School near New London until her marriage and worked at the Glove Factory in New London and Fairfield until starting her family. In 1945, she and her husband moved to Dallas City, Ill., where they owned and operated a grocery store. Later they moved to LaHarpe, Ill., and purchased the Gamble's store. They retired to New London.
She was a former member of First Christian Church in Dallas City and a member of New London Christian Church. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School for many years and also enjoyed reading and sewing.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Kay Miller of New London and Jean Rabong of West Burlington; one son, Gary Thomes of Dallas City, Ill.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Verda Little of Spring Valley, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and four sisters, including one in infancy.
Visitation will begin at noon today at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Thomes will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Rod Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery, New London.
A memorial has been established.
