Mt. Pleasant - Sumner D. Garretson, 61, prominent Henry county resident and senior member of the real estate firm of Garretson & Garretson, died in Memorial hospital at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday after an extended illness.

The body was removed to Stevens funeral home, Salem, and funeral services will be held at Salem Methodist church at 2 p.m. Friday. Burial will be there.

Born Aug. 6, 1882, on the family homestead east of Salem, he was the son of Owen A. and Emma Dilts Garretson. Engaged first in farming, he later became field appraiser in eastern Iowa for Federal Land Bank of Omaha, and in that capacity 7 years made wide acquaintance in the state. About 4 years ago, he and son, Wayne K., established here their real estate firm. From near Salem, the family moved to Mt. Pleasant last December.

He was a member of Salem Masonic lodge.

In 1906, he married Florence White, who survives with 5 children: Wayne K., of the family farm near Salem; Mrs. Craig [Wilma] Wilmeth, Hillsboro; Loren, Bartlesville, Okla.; Doris, in school at Cedar Falls, and Keith, at home; three brothers, Dr. Howard, of Salem and Mt. Pleasant; Herman J., Pasadena, Calif.; O. Alvin, Los Angeles, Calif. Two brothers, Dr. Wendell and Gilbert, preceded him in death.
