Shirley Wellington

Born Jan. 20, 1928, in Des Moines County, she was the daughter of Howard Sr. and Gladys Anna Zihlman Swailes. She married Jim Wellington in Iowa City. They later divorced.

Mrs. Wellington managed the canteen at the Mental Health Institute and retired after 27 years of service.

She was a 1946 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. She spent most of her adult years in Mount Pleasant.

She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, Mount Pleasant Moose Lodge 1002 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, dancing and listening to music from the 1940s and1950s.

Survivors include two sisters, Sharon Moad of West Burlington and Sally Wehrle of Mount Pleasant; two brothers, Howard "Buck" Swailes Jr. of Rome and Edward "Hook" Swailes of Thomson, Ill.; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel.

The funeral for Mrs. Wellington will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Henry Ledbetter officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to Faith Lutheran Church or the Henry County Cancer Fund.
