Elsie Swailes

Elsie Swailes, 97, of Mount Pleasant, died following declining health Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Jan. 28, 1905, north of Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Ada Pearl Lane McClure. On April 19, 1924, she married Charles David Swailes in Mount Pleasant. He died May 9, 1982.

Mrs. Swailes worked in the Candy Kitchen prior to marriage. She was a bookkeeper and salesperson for the family auto parts business she and her husband started in 1943 on Adams Street in Mount Pleasant. She continued working there several years after her husband died.

She was raised in the White Oak area northwest of Mount Pleasant and attended church and school there. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant for more than 75 years, she held many offices in church circles. She was a member of the music mothers club.

Survivors include one son, Charles W. Swailes of Sun City, Calif.; one daughter, Doris Taylor of Mount Pleasant; one daughter-in-law; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert McClure of Mount Pleasant.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one infant daughter, three brothers, two sisters,one great-grandson and one great-great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. There will be no family visitation.

The funeral for Mrs. Swailes will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Harry Hollingsworth, pastor of Danville Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Fern Rold, Rebecca Circles, both at First Baptist Church, White Oak Church and Pleasant Manor Care Center activities department.
