E. Jane Sammons

Born June 6, 1933, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Frank Jacob and Grace Uabella Blythe Krieger. On Feb. 20, 1948, she married Virgil Richard Sammons in West Burlington. He died Feb. 17, 1992.

Mrs. Sammons was the head of the housekeeping department of Iowa Wesleyan College from 1982 until her retirement in 1995.

She attended school in Mount Pleasant. For more than 30 years, she was associated with the Midwest Old Threshers. As a member of the Iris City CB Club, she was one of the members who provided security for Midwest Old Threshers. She will be remembered by most as the lady who sewed the "train engineer hats" of which she made thousands. She volunteered in several other ways at Midwest Old Threshers, from office work to planting flowers and garden produce there. She served as president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post No. 2561. She was a member of the Traveling Tigers Camping Club and was treasurer of the South Center Club. She decorated the Colonial Apartments for the various seasons and holidays of the year and, when time allowed, enjoyed gardening and shopping.

Survivors include two sons, Duane Sammons of Ottawa, Kan., and Deane Sammons of Mount Pleasant; two daughters, Mary Jane Parker of Portland, Ore., and Janet Johnson of Burlington; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, June Stearns of Mount Pleasant.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, two brothers and four sisters.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Sammons will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Jeffrey "Duke" Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.
