Virgil R. Sammons

Virgil R. Sammons, 75, 405 E. Green, Mt. Pleasant, died at 7:24 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 1992, at Henry County Health Center.

He was born Sept. 22, 1916, in Rome, the son of Clem A. and Lottie M. Messer Sammons. On Feb. 20, 1948, in West Burlington, he married E. Jane Kreiger.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the South Pacific during WWII.

He was a mechanic for Ford Motor Company for most of his life, working for sheets Motor Company, Mt. Pleasant. He retired form General Electric, Burlington in 1978.

He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Iris C.B. Club, Mt. Pleasant Police Reserve for six years, Travelin' Tigers Camping Club, and a life member of the NRA.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Duane, Pomona, Kan., and Deane, Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Mary) Parker, Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Larry (Janet) Johnson, Burlington; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Oral, rural Mt. Pleasant, Clem Jr., Rome, and Gerald, Mt. Pleasant; four sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Wanda) Gill, Fairfield; Mrs. Claren (Hazel) Garrison, New London, Mrs. Robert (Esther) Rouse and Mrs. Gilbert (Cecil) Milks, both of Mt. Pleasant.

Preceding him in death were his parents; on daughter, Diane Fraize; and a sister, Dorothy Sammons.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Weir Funeral Home, with Rev. Jeffrey Crawford officiating. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery with full military rites.

Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. A memorial has been established to White Oak Cemetery.
