Lawrence Sammons

Lawrence Edward Sammons, 86, of the Lockridge area, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Born Aug. 12, 1915, near Rome, Iowa, he was the son of Arthur and Anna Marie Brown Sammons. He married Mary Agnes Gilmer on Aug. 5, 1940, in Davenport. She died April 21, 1955. He then married Maxine Tague on May 5, 1959, in Mount Pleasant. She died Oct. 16, 1996.

Mr. Sammons was a graduate of Lockridge High School. He worked at a button factory, was an auto mechanic in Fort Madison for a short time and farmed his entire life on his farm southwest of Rome.

He loved gardening, fishing, woodworking, crafts and spending winters in Brownsville, Texas.

Survivors include one son, Kelvin Tague of Lockridge; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Walter Sammons of Des Moines; one niece; one nephew; and several cousins.

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one niece.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Sammons will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Pastor Ed Newman officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
