Vernon J. Leeper

Vernon J. (Red) Leeper, 60, 211 S. Cherry, Mt. Pleasant, died at 10:45 p.m. Friday, April 3, 1981 at Henry County Health Center.

Born Oct. 19, 1920, he was the son of R. B. and Lelah Moore Leeper. On June 15, 1947 at Mt. Pleasant, he married Martha L. Gholson, who survives.

Mr. Leeper was a graduate of Lockridge High School in 1938. He attended Parsons College, Fairfield, before serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He worked for the Mt. Pleasant Lumber Yard from 1949 to 1951 and managed the Winfield Lumber Yard from 1951 to 1952. In 1952 he became manager of the United Building Center, Mt. Pleasant.

Mr. Leeper was a member of the United Methodist Church, V.F.W. Post 2561,
Kiwanis Club and had been a conductor on the Midwest Central Railroad at Old Threshers.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Sherri L., a student at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls; one brother, Jerry D. of Clinton; one sister, Mrs. Harvey (Myrna) Lew of Danville.

His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 6 at the First United Methodist Church. Dr. Robert P. Robinson and the Rev. Ned H. Cross officiated. Military interment was held in the Forest Home Cemetery.

Mrs. Robert McKim was the organist and James M. Green soloist.

Casket bearers were Stanley Mathews, Henry Holler, Byron Livix, Charles Brombaugh, Duane Maxwell, Donald Boldt, Waldo Sutton and Larry Brenizer.

Memorials have been established for the First United Methodist Church or the Kidney Dialysis Unit at the Henry County Health Center.

Weir Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
