Edward Callaway

Edward J. Callaway, 78, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Ardor Court in Mount Pleasant.

Born December 29, 1929 in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Alonzo B. and Melda B. Luzadder Callaway. On August 17, 1955, he married Roberta Scarff in Milan, Illinois.

Mr. Callaway was an auto body technician and was employed by Russ Shafer Auto for several years. For 11 years, he worked for Mount Pleasant Utilities in the maintenance department as a fireman engineer.

He was a lifelong resident of Mount Pleasant and attended Mount Pleasant Schools. In 1951, he joined the Army and was discharged on February 12, 1953.

He enjoyed working with cars and was an avid midget, go-cart and stock-car racer for 15 years. He was known as Sonny Callaway in the racing circuit.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda Dovenspike and Connie Meth, both of Mount Pleasant; one sister, Wanda Aronson of Bettendorf; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation for Mr. Callaway will be from 2 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 P.M.

The funeral for Mr. Callaway will be at 10 A.M. Wednesday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Bob David officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.

Memorials have been established for the Mount Pleasant VFW Post No. 2561, the American Legion Post No. 58 and Midwest Old Threshers.
