Carmen Ursel Barr

Carmen Ursel Barr, 93, of Mount Pleasant, passed away Friday, April 8, 2011, at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Herbert G. Shafer officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.

Visitation is from 9 p.m. today at Kinzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, with the family present from 6-7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or the Arbor Court activity department.

Mrs. Barr was born April 30, 1917, near Merrimac, the daughter of Peter Sell and Alvira Shook Hinkle. She married Russell Guinn in 1937 in Mount Pleasant. The couple later divorced. She married Earl Paxton Barr May 4, 1955, in Kahoka, Mo. He died Nov. 26, 1995, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant. For several years following Mrs. Barr's companion was Lawrence Gerst.

When Mrs. Barr was 2, her mother died, she was raised by her father and stepmother, Laura Clawson Hinkle. She attended Starr Country School. For 15 years, Mrs. Barr was fountain manager for the former Kyle Drug Store in Mount Pleasant. With Mr. Barr she operated the Country Cousins Cafe in Lockridge. Later she worked the admission gates for the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion.

Mrs. Barr was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a former member of Women of the Moose of Mount Pleasant. She volunteered many hours at the Mount Pleasant Senior Center.

Mrs. Barr loved making noodles and pies for the farmers market.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas R. Guinn and wife Diane of Park Rapids, Minn., Virgil Barr and wife Linda and Jack Cantwell, all of Mount Pleasant; four daughters, Joy Gilleard and husband Roy of Mount Pleasant, Judy Hoer and husband Paul of Mexico, Mo., Donna Sue Fillinger and husband Donald of Lockridge and Joyce Young and husband Jerry of Mount Pleasant; one brother, Robert Hinkle of Fort Madison; one son-in-law, Clarence VanAmerogen of Mount Pleasant; 19 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and Mr. Gerst, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Timothy Guinn; one daughter, Verlee VanAmerogen; three brothers: Peter Hinkle Jr., John Hinkle and Richard Canaris; two sisters: Georganna Frederick and Marcella Graber; and three grandchildren.
