Clarence Sammons

Clarence Sammons, 72, Rome, died Saturday, March 5, 1983, at 11:10 p.m. at the Henry County Health Center, Mt. Pleasant.

He was born Jan. 4, 1911, at Rome, the son of Edward and Anna L. Messer Sammons. On Jan. 15, 1935, at Galesburg, Ill., he married Irma E. Lee who survives.

Mr. Sammons was a retired carpenter and a member of the White Oak Baptist Church. He had served on the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department for 17 years.

In addition to his wife he is survived by four sons, Henry E. and Guy V., both of Mt. Pleasant; Don O., Salem; and Dennis E., Rome; two daughters, Esta M. Sammons, Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. Neville (Rosie) Wiggins, Rome; one brother, Floyd, Rome; one sister, Mrs, Richard (Ina) Manning, Fairfield; 25 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

His parents, one son, Darrell; one brother, Lloyd; and one great-grandchild preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, at the White Oak Baptist Church north of Rome with Loy Lollar officiating, Interment will be held in the White Oak Cemetery.

Friends may call as they desire at the Weir Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

Friends may call as they desire after noon on Tuesday at the Clarence Sammons home in Rome where the body will lie in state Tuesday afternoon and evening. The body will be taken to the White Oak Baptist Church on Wednesday.

A memorial has been established for the Henry County Heart Fund.
