Services For John Elmer Messer

FAIRFIELD -- Last rites were Thursday at 2 p.m. for John Elmer Messer, retired C. B. & Q. railroad employee who passed away suddenly shortly after noon Tuesday.

The services were at the Weston Behner funeral home with the Rev. Robert Swanson in charge. Burial was in White Oak cemetery, north of Rome.

Messer became ill Tuesday about noon at his home, 602 S. Depot. A physician was called and he ordered Messer taken to the hospital by ambulance. He passed away about 12:30 p.m.

John Elmer Messer, 74, was born May 28, 1885, in Henry county, the son of Albert and Katherine Smith Messer. He married Stella May Hill on Feb. 2, 1906.

He had been a resident of Fairfield for 35 years and was employed by the C. B. & Q. railroad for 22 years before his retirement eight years ago.

Besides his wife he is survived by the following children: Mrs. Viola Samuelson, Mrs. Grace Samuelson and Everett Messer, all of Fairfield; Mrs. Bessie Standley and Mrs. Esther Dollins, both of Davenport; Mrs. Gladys Willich, Buffalo, Iowa; and Leonard Messer, New Sharon.
