Friday Evening, 18 March 1960Ralph W. McClure Dies At Farm After Shoveling Snow
----------Ralph Waldo McClure, 77, died at his farm home northwest of Mt. Pleasant at 12:45 p.m. Thursday. Death was apparently due to a heart attack while shoveling snow.
Mr. McClure had helped Mail Carrier Arthur Hankins near the McClure mail box get free from a snow drift about 12:30 Thursday afternoon and probably had started to do additional shoveling of snow after Hankins left.
Mrs. McClure becoming alarmed after her husband failed to return within a reasonable time, went to look for him and found him lying in the snow. As there was no telephone in the home and the house is away from the main road, she started to walk to the home of the son, Carlos, about a mile away. She was picked up and taken on there.
Coroner Hugh Dallinger said that death was evidently due to a heart attack. He was called after it became apparent that it was a coroner's case and went out with Sheriff Russell Van Tuyl.
The son of Aaron and Melissa (Sacket) McClure, he was born near Wayland, Iowa, on Sept. 13, 1882. He was a lifelong resident of Henry county, living on the present farm about 40 years.
On Jan. 13, 1904, he was married to Ada Lane in Mt. Pleasant.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. C. D. (Elsie) Swailes and Mrs. Werner (Alice) Smith, both of Mt. Pleasant; three sons, Carlos, Don and Robert McClure, all of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, John of Des Moines, eighteen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. His parents, one sister Mrs. Lena Wick; one daughter, Marguarete, and one son, John preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held in the White Oak Church on Sunday, March 20, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Walter Gray will officiate.
Interment will be in White Oak Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the R. K. Crane Funeral Home Saturday evening from 7:30 to 9.
