Mrs. Edith Smith

MOUNT PLEASANT — Mrs. Edith Smith, 405 South Jefferson street, died in University hospitals, Iowa City, at 4 a. m. Dec. 6, at the age of 78.

Death terminated a long illness.

The daughter of Linzey and Elizabeth Zantmyer Jay, Mrs. Smith was born in Henry county on April 5, 1877, and was married to John M. Smith on Jan. 15, 1902. They farmed in Henry county until 1947, when they moved into Mount Pleasant. Smith died in 1948. Two daughters also died previously.

Mrs. Smith is survived by three sons and two daughters: Leo Smith and Mrs. Blanche Loeffler, both of Cedar Rapids; Iliff Smith, Mount Pleasant; Lester Smith, at home, and Mrs. Agnes Ogg, of Council Bluffs.

Also surviving are a brother, Joseph Jay, Powder River, Ore.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Last rites will be held at the Crane funeral home at 2 p. m. Thursday. Dr. E. A. Mathews, associate pastor of First Methodist church, will officiate, and burial will be in Richwoods cemetery.
