Friday, 21 May 1948Funeral Held For John M. Smith
The memorial service for John M. Smith was held at the Crane Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 with Dr. George G. Hunt, pastor of the First Methodist church in charge.
Mrs. Stanley B. Niles and Mrs. Will McClaran sang and Mrs. Dan Winter played the organ. Pallbearers were Walter Spry, Ed Yocum, Joe Thomas, Verdon Hall, Elmer McPherron and Walter Shepp. Burial was in the Richwood cemetery.
John M. Smith, son of William and Margaret Smith, was born in Henry county, Iowa, August 1, 1877, and passed away from this life very suddenly, at his home in Mt. Pleasant, May 17, 1948.
With the exception of two years in Jefferson county, all of his life was spent on farms in Trenton township, until the family moved to Mt. Pleasant, a little more than a year ago.
On January 15, 1902, he married Edith Jay, and for forty-five years they lived together and reared their family on the girlhood farm of Mrs. Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by Mrs. Smith of Mt. Pleasant, and three sons and two daughters: Mrs. Agnes Spry, Mt. Pleasant; Iliff, Mt. Pleasant; Mrs, Blanche Loeffler, Cedar Rapids; Lester, Mt. Pleasant; and Leo, Cedar Rapids. Other survivors are four brothers and two sisters; Grant, Osceola; William and Hiram, Mt. Pleasant; James Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. Rose Weller, Yakima, Wash.; Mrs. Margaret Williams and Mrs. Nancy Parker, Mt. Pleasant. There are four surviving grandchildren. Two daughters and two sisters preceded him in death.
