Elsie Cornick

Elsie Cornick, 91, of Mount Pleasant died at 3:17 a.m. Tuesday, at the Jefferson County Hospital.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. A rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. at the funeral home followed by family visitation from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Mrs. Cornick was born Oct. 3, 1909, in Mount Pleasant, the daughter of John William and Mary Alice Manning Shumaker. She married Leo "Mark" Cornick on Sept. 14, 1935 at the St. Alphonsus Parsonage in Mount Pleasant. He died July 15, 1999.

The youngest of nine children, she began work at the Mount Pleasant Telephone Company as a switchboard operator in 1931 and worked there until she and Mark moved to his father's farm in 1937. In 1950 she returned to the telephone company when she and her husband returned to Mount Pleasant and worked there until she retired Nov. 1, 1974.

She was a member of the St. Alphonsus Altar and Rosary Society. She fished, knitted, crocheted and danced and spent time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Ann Shima and husband Bill of Audubon, Nancy Bell and husband Frank of Fairfield and Sally Bell and husband Rodger of Roseburg, Ore.; one son, Michael Cornick and wife Deloris of Spring Valley, Ark.; one sister, Mary Hoaglin of Sarasota, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
