Charles Newman

Charles W. Newman, 71, of Van Buren, Ark., formerly of Salem, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at his home.

Born Oct. 10, 1930, in Winfield, he was the son of Charles Leslie and Maude Marie Carpenter Newman.
He married Joan Christner on April 10, 1948. He later married Marjoree Wilson. They were divorced in 2000.

Mr. Newman lived most of his life in Henry County and for the past three years in Van Buren. He worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and also farmed. He was owner of C.W. Newman Construction and owner and operator of Charlie's Country Place in Salem.

He loved bluegrass music. He played many instruments and was best known for playing the mandolin. Twenty-seven years ago, he and Terry Vance started the Salem Bluegrass Festival, which today is known as the Salem Country/Bluegrass Music Festival.

Survivors include three daughters, Sheila Carr of Salem, Lavonda "Katie" Mitchell of Bonaparte and Connie Dorothy of Van Buren; two sons, Gary Newman of Mount Pleasant and David Harper of Packwood; one sister, Wanda Daniels of Sun City, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Newman will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Salem Friends Church, with Pastor Tom Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Salem South Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Salem Country/Bluegrass Music Festival.
