Aug. 15, 1923 - Sept. 2, 2007

Vernelda C. Slagel, 84, died Sept. 2, 2007 at Parkview Home in Wayland, due to complications of heart attack and stroke.

A funeral service has been set for Sept. 7, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in Wayland, with Rev. Nathan Luitjens officiating

Visitation is set for Sept. 6, from 3-8 p.m. with family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m. at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Cemetery. Peterseim Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Vernelda was born Aug. 15, 1923, the daughter of Dan and Viola (Wyse) Widmer of Wayland. She graduated from Wayland High School and worked as a sales clerk at Wayland SuperValu for many years.

She married Warren Slagel Nov. 10, 1946 in St. John's, Mich. She was a lifetime member of the Sugar Creek Mennoite Church.

She is survived by her husband, and three children and their spouses including Eric Slagel of Wayland, Wendy and Ron Scarff of Wayland, and Kelly and wife Veronica of Wayland three brothers including Dale and wife Geraldine Widmer of Mt. Pleasant, Wesley and wife Leslie Widmer of Washington and Stanley and wife Martha Widmer of Wayland. She is also survived by four sisters-in-law, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, an infant son, Kevin, six brothers - Galen, Clayton, Clinton, George, Willard and Blaine.
