Marvin Cornick

Marvin Nelson Cornick, 93, of Mount Pleasant died Monday, June 28, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born Feb. 1, 1917, on a farm east of Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Harry E. and Minnie Graf Cornick. His mother died when he was young, and he was raised by two of his aunts. On Sept. 27, 1941, he married Muriel Louise Alley in Mount Pleasant.

Mr. Cornick farmed and raised livestock. He milked cows, many years by hand, and sold milk to the cheese factory in Nauvoo, Ill. He previously worked for Standard Oil Co. in Burlington. He attended East Highland country school, graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1935, and earned a bachelor of science degree in biology at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant and member of the former MeMarCo Sunday School Class. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity while in college. He served many years on the Board of Directors of the Henry County Credit Union, and was a member of Henry County Cattlemen's Association and Henry County Farm Bureau. He volunteered at Midwest Old Threshers, and used his knowledge of old farming techniques and machinery to lead tours of the grounds and equipment.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, David Cornick and John Cornick, both of Mount Pleasant and Craig Cornick of Burlington; one daughter, Sue Mills of Columbia, Mo.; one half-brother, Dwight Cornick of Burlington; one sister, Doris Brent of Mount Pleasant; two half-sisters, Joyce Tedrow of Augusta and Darla Dodds of Charles City; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two half-brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant where some family members will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Cornick will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Kimzey Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeffrey A. McPheron officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Mount Pleasant.

Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church and Midwest Old Threshers.
