John Mitchell

Born Jan. 6, 1932, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of John E. and Lillian Matthews Mitchell. On Oct. 21, 1950, he married Charlotte Adams. She died in 1998. In October 2000, he married Shirley Hummell.

Mr. Mitchell was a butcher for Beavers and a TV repairman for Nesbitts before becoming an institutional baker at the Mental Health Institute and then the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility until his retirement.

He enjoyed a short hobby as a stock car driver. He was a supporter of Iowa Public Television's nature programming and was a Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He was a member of Trenton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Rebecca Turney of Park Hills, Ky., Cynthia Bell of Boone and Marie Mitchell of Richmond, Texas; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one half brother, Melvin Long of California.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The celebration of life for Mr. Mitchell will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Trenton United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Wayne Township Cemetery near Olds.

A memorial has been established to fund a chair lift for Trenton United Methodist Church.
