Margaret Messer

Margaret Louise Messer, 86, of Olds died Friday, April 15, 2011, at Parkview Home in Wayland.

Born Jan. 17, 1925, in Keokuk County, she was the daughter of Frank and Esther Hartman Jaeger. On Nov. 28, 1945, she married Harold A. Messer.

Mrs. Messer was a 1942 graduate of the Webster High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College, earning a teaching certificate. She taught at Montgomery Rural school near Trenton. She and her husband had farmed near Trenton, Wayland and Olds. She also had worked as bookkeeper at the Olds office of Mount Pleasant Bank and Trust, Bill's Grocery and Cafe in Olds, Peterson's Inc. outside of Olds, Spahn and Rose Lumber Co. of Olds, and for three years at Packer's Sanitation Services in Mount Pleasant.

She was a member of the Olds United Church of Christ, teaching Sunday School and Bible School, filling countless offices and serving as part-time organist for 15 years. She also had been a Cub Scout den mother for five years.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Anne Davis and Nancy Eichelberger, both of Wayland; two sons, Donald Messer of Washington, Dean Messer of Shellsburg; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Toby Jaeger of Marshalltown Veterans Home; and two sisters, Frances Stauffer of Quincy, Ill.; and Ruth Hoffman of Rockford, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral service for Mrs. Messer will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Olds United Church of Christ, with the Pastors Carl and Elaine Vass officiating. Burial will be in North Wayne Township Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Olds United Church of Christ.
