Richard Gholson

Richard D. "Dick" Gholson, 77, of Mount Pleasant died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born Oct. 17, 1932, in rural Henry County, he was the son of Edmond R. "Pete" and Mary Helen Ridinger Gholson. On June 14, 1953, he married Leona Prehm in Mount Pleasant.

Mr. Gholson farmed and served on the Soil Conservation Commission for 35 years. He graduated from New London High School in 1950, attended Iowa Wesleyan College and earned a bachelor of science degree at Iowa State University in 1960. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of New London United Methodist Church. He was a member of American Legion, Henry County Zoning Board and Cattlemans Association and Pork Producers. He earned the Iowa Ag Radio Good Neighbor Award in 2006, and in 2004, was the Henry County Cattleperson of the Year. He played Santa Claus for care centers, assisted living homes, hospitals and ARK, and visited many private homes in the area. He was a Cyclone fan.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Tamara Bavendam of New York and Traci Nicholson of Winfield; three sons, Terry of Grimes, Tim of Iowa City and Troy of Newton; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Robert D. "Bob" Gholson of Mount Pleasant; one sister, Donna Gray of Mount Pleasant; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Monday at Elliott Chapel in New London where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Gholson will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel. Burial with military rites will be in Burge Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Camp Courageous and New London United Methodist Church.
