Russell H. "Speedy" Carruthers

Russell 'Speedy' CARRUTHERS, 83, of Keosauqua died at 2:20 P.M. Tuesday September 24, 2002 at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center where he had been a resident for the past four months. He was born April 11, 1919 in Keosauqua to Lee A. and Estelle (ELSE) CARRUTHERS. Mr. CARRUTHERS grew up in Keosauqua and graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1937. He married Alberta T. 'Rooney' LAWSON in Memphis, MO on September 13, 1941. She died March 20, 1994.

Mr. CARRUTHERS worked for Lowenberg Bakery as a Route Salesman in the Mt. Pleasant area for over 20 years. Following his retirement he worked for Bezoni's True Value in Mt. Pleasant for several years then returned to Keosauqua in 1996. He was a member of the Keosauqua Lions Club, served in the U.S. Army Pacific Theater during World War II, member of Veteran's of Foreign War Post No. 2561 in Mt. Pleasant and had attended the First Congregational Church in Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Carruthers spent a great deal of time enjoying the wildlife and scenery at Lacey-Keosauqua State Park.

He is survived by two sons: George L. CARRUTHERS of Mt. Union and Ronald H. CARRUTHERS of Mt. Pleasant and his wife Pamela, his daughter Peggy L. MORROW of Burlington and her husband Daniel, special friend LaVon Hannam of Keosauqua, six grandchildren; Jana ENGEBRETSON, Joshua MORROW, Amanda and Kyle CARRUTHERS, Angela and Nathan CARRUTHERS, three great-granddaughters and one brother E. Paul CARRUTHERS of Ft. Myers, FL. His parents, wife, two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M. Friday September 27, 2002 at the Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua with Rev. Connie Markle officiating. Burial, following cremation, was at Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant at 9:30 A.M. Saturday with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post No. 58, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2561 and AMVETS Post No. 44, all of Mt. Pleasant. Memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society, Keosauqua Library, Friends of Lacey or the donor's choice.

(Speedy's obit also appeared in the Mt. Pleasant (Ia.) News but I do not have a date or a complete copy of that obit so am using the one from Van Buren Co. Carruthers is intwined with my LAWSON line.)
