DEATH OF MATTHEW JOHNSON.
A Veteran Soldier and Well Known Citizen Passes Away on his Seventy-Ninth Birthday.

Christmas day Matthew Johnson, an old soldier died at his home on C. B. and Q. avenue of Bright's disease. He had been ill a long time, and his death was not unexpected.

Mr. Johnson was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1849. He married Miss Honor Cullen of Kildare, Ireland and came to the United States in the same year. He landed at New Orleans, and then, after a short time he moved north to Buller county Ohio, and from there to Indiana. With his family he came to Iowa in 1855. In 1861 he enlisted and served four years as a private in Co. C, 4th Iowa Cavalry. He made an honorable record as a soldier, and was regarded by his captain and other officers as one of the most trustworthy men in the company. After his discharge, he returned to Mt. Pleasant.

Of the seven children, three have already passed over the river. They are Maud, William and Matthew. Two daughters, Mrs. Reynolds of this city, and Mrs. Kate Toomey, of Aurora, were at their father's bedside. The two sons who live in New Mexico, John H. and Edward could not come here before their father's death.

The funeral services were in charge of the G.A.R. Post of which Mr. Johnson was a worthy member. The services were held at his late home on Saturday morning at ten o'clock. The interment was in Forrest Home cemetery.
