Christmas day Matthew Johnson, an old soldier died at his home on C.B. and Q. avenue of Bright's disease. He had been ill a long time, and his death was not unexpected.

In 1861 he enlisted and served four years as a private in Co, C. 4th Iowa Cavalry. Of the seven children three have already passed over the river. They are Maud, William and Matthew. Two daughters, Mrs. Reynolds of this city, and Mrs. Kate Toomey, of Aurora, were at their father's bed side. The two sons who live in New Mexico, John H. and Edward could not come here before their father's death.
