DEATH OF PETER FISHER.

The venerable Peter Fisher who for weeks has been gradually failing, quietly breathing his last at ten minutes before seven o'clock, Wednesday evening, Oct. 8th, 1890, age 95 years and 12 days. His funeral will take place from the family residence on Adams street, on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Grand Army Post, of this city, of which he was the oldest member.

Peter Fisher was born in North Carolina, of German parentage, September 26, 1795. He removed with his parents to the state of Ohio when about thirteen years of age, not being able to speak a word of English. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to a tailor for four years, but a few months before his term of service expired, in which time he was to have had six month's schooling, he enlisted in the United States army, May 31st, 1813, in which he served until Sept. 18th, 1814. In December, 1816, he married Miss Elizabeth Harberson, in Eaton, Ohio. They had six children, three of whom now survive him, one son living in Oregon, one in Kansas, and one well known to many of our people, Joseph S. Fisher, of Pittsburgh, Ohio, who will be present at the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Fisher afterwards removed to other towns in Ohio, then to Montezuma, Indiana. In 1851 they came to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, where Mrs. Fisher died a few years after. In 1857 he married Mrs. P. H. Joslyn, who survives him. Mrs. Joslyn at the time of her marriage had two children, whom Mr. Fisher adopted, giving them the fatherly care and protection same as his own.

In September, 1862, Mr. Fisher joined the Union army to suppress the rebellion, in which he served on guard duty until February 1864. While at Rock Island he was so unfortunate as to break his hip, and was a cripple ever after. Reaching home in July he was discharged from the service.

This in brief is the life of a good and worthy man, a kind and affectionate husband, a generous neighbor and friend, true and noble in all the relations of life.
