William H. Thoma, 73, died Thursday January 24, 1985, at his Wayland home following a lengthy illness. Services will be at 11 A.M. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with the Rev. John Whalen officiating. Burial will be in North Hill Cemetery near Wayland, with full military graveside rites by the Bain-Hulme American Legion Post of Wayland. Visitation has begun at Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland. Memorial gifts may be left for North Hill Cemetery or St. James Church, of which he was a member.

Mr. Thoma was born January 31,1911 in Fairfield, a son of William H. and Dorothy Scanell Thoma. He married Kathryn Wolf on August 29, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Mr. and Mrs. Thoma owned and operated the South Side Cafe in Wayland for 21 years before retiring. He served in the Army from 1941 to 1946 and retired in 1971 from the U.S. Army Reserve. He also held a government civil service post. He was a member of the Fairfield VFW, the Wayland American Legion Post, and the Reserve Officers Association.

Survivors include: a son, William J. of Wayland; two daughters, Linda (Mrs. Kenneth) Groff of Wayland and Pat (Mrs. Charles) Hession of Iowa City; and a sister, Eileen Ferre of Mt. Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.
