H.A. Mathews, Danville, Dies

Howard A. Mathews, 78, Danville, prominent Des Moines County farmer, educator, legislator and banker, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Burlington hospital. He had suffered strokes Friday and Saturday.

Mathews was born Sept. 27, 1866, in Danville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Mathews, pioneer residents of the county.

During an active life he served as superintendent of schools of the county 9 years, taught rural schools for about 14 years, served 10 years in the Iowa legislature as representative from Des Moines County and was speaker of the house for one special-session.

For more than 10 years he had been president of Danville State bank, and was regared as one of the most successful farmer-bankers in the county. He was a member of Des Moines County selective service board No. 2, a member of the state inheritance tax board, and member of the county farm bureau.

He was united in marriage Oct. 29, 1896, with Emma Gugeler and was a member of the Congregational church at Danville.

Surviving are his widow; 4 children, Alvin Mathews of Long Island, N.Y., George Mathews of Danville, Lorin Mathews of Chicago anf Mrs. Paul Kellar, Danville; three brothers, Warren Mathews of New Londn, Willis Mathews and Fred Mathews of Danville; a sister, Birdie Mathews of Danville, and 6 grandchildren.

The body was removed to the Elliot funeral hone in New London. Funeral services will be held at the Congregational church in Danville, probably Thursday. The exact time will be announced later.
