George Carruthers
George L. Carruthers, 60, of West Burlington died at 8:25 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born Dec. 5, 1947, in Fairfield he was the son of Russell "Speedy" and Alberta "Rooney" Lawson Carruthers.

Mr. Carruthers worked at Kauffman Motors and Everrett Smith Construction. He worked at Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility as a correctional officer, lieutenant, captain and security director. He worked at Iowa State Penitentiary as a captain, retiring in 2007. He was a 1966 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

He was a past member of Open Bible Church in Mount Pleasant where he served on the Board of Elders and taught junior high Sunday school. He was a member of American Legion Post 58 in Mount Pleasant and lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 2561 in Mount Pleasant. He was assistant Scout master of Troop 40 Boy Scouts of America, Blackhawk Lodge 61 Order of the Arrow and Silver Tomahawk. He assisted at Camp Eastman. He enjoyed camping, fishing, sprint car racing, NASCAR and gardening.

Survivors include one son, Kyle Carruthers of Burlington; one daughter, Amanda Carruthers of Burlington; three grandchildren; one brother, Ron Carruthers of Mount Pleasant; one sister, Peggy Morrow of Burlington; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild and his parents.

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. The body has been cremated.

The memorial service for Mr. Carruthers will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Dean Graber officiating. Private family burial with military rites will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Mount Pleasant.

Memorials have been established for Lacey Park in Keosauqua, Troop 40 Boy Scouts and Great River Hospice.
