James Collins

James Sherman Collins, 90, of Burlington, died at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at his home.

Born Aug. 31, 1908, in Des Moines County, he was the son of William Sherman and Rose Anna Fetterman Collins. On May 17, 1937, he married Mildred Leah Rice in Mount Pleasant. She died Nov. 29, 1972. He then married Ruth A. Engberg on Sept. 1, 1973, in Burlington.

Mr. Collins was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a self-employed barber for more than 50 years.

He was the oldest male member of Messiah Lutheran Church of Burlington, member of New London Masonic Lodge AF & AM, past member of Burlington Kiwanis Club, member of Destroyer Escort Association and Moose Lodge No. 579.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Edward Collins of Gillette, Wyo., and David Collins of Kansas City, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; one stepson, Robert Engberg of Burlington; one stepdaughter, Mary L. Bloomquist of Burlington; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Sunday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Collins will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Messiah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Donald D. Hoornstra officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery in Danville.

A memorial has been established for Messiah Lutheran Church.
