Phil Marshall
Phil Marshall, 99, of Winfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, in Rogers, Minn.Born Nov. 2, 1908, in Swedesburg, he was the son of James A. and Adeline Conrad Marshall. On Jan. 29, 1936, he married Shasta Lucille Spangler of Winfield. She died in April 2005.
Mr. Marshall farmed in the Winfield area until retiring in 1959. He also worked in town at the elevator and lumber yard for a number of years while he was farming and after he retired from farming.
He graduated from Olds High School in 1925. After six months of business school, he worked for a time in Chicago. He then returned to Winfield to help out at home. During the Depression, he helped build the original Highway 218 from Mount Pleasant to Crawfordsville.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winfield and the Lions Club. He played softball until he was 50, when he switched to golf, making a hole-in one-in 1994 at age 86.
Survivors include two daughters, Ellie Tompkins of Cedar Falls and Barb Longnecker of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; one son, Phil Marshall Jr. of Altus, Okla.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one sister, Lorna.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.
Mr. Marshall's body has been cremated.
There will be a memorial service and unurnment for Phil and Shasta Marshall on Memorial Day weekend.
