Darrell Wellington

Darrell A. Wellington, 70, of Mount Pleasant, died at 230 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at his home.

Born Aug. 27, 1927, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Frank and Elsie V. Carpenter Wellington. On July 5, 1974, he married Joyce E. Thorington in Fairfield.

Mr. Wellington attended schools in Mount Pleasant. He was a Korean War Army veteran. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a presidential citation for heroism under fire in recapturing a heavy machine gun and ammunition to save a regimental defensive position at Yangji, Korea, on Jan. 25, 1951.

He worked for Geige and General Mills companies. For 25 years, he was owner/operator of Wellington Concrete Contractors in Mount Pleasant.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2561 of Mount Pleasant and was one of the original founders of Henry County Avenue of Flags. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Peggy Wellington of Ottumwa, Debbie Allender and Cathy Wellington, both of Mount Pleasant; eight grandchildren; one brother, Glenn Wellington of Mount Pleasant; and two sisters, Yeoland O. Butler of Chicago, Ill., and Lucille Williams of Mount Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one grandson, one sister and five brothers.

Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 830 p.m.

The graveside funeral for Mr. Wellington will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Forest Home Cemetery of Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Henry Ledbetter officiating. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 2561.

A memorial has been established for Henry County Avenue of Flags Veterans Memorial.
