DIED.

CAMPBELL - On Friday, April 27th, at the residence of her son, Thomas F. Campbell, in Marion township, Mrs. Chaney Campbell, aged 77 years.

Mrs. Campbell was a woman of uncommon intelligence and energy. When we first knew her she was a widow, living on a small farm west of Hickory Grove. Hers had been a busy life, and she chose to thus care for herself rather than live with her children, although she had two sons and five daughters all living in that township and all of them ready and willing to care for her and all of them did take a lively interest in her welfare. Mrs. Campbell came to Henry Co. in an early day. Her husband Hugh Campbell located and bought a large amount of land in Marion township, all of it being of the first quality. Mr. Campbell was known and respected as one of the first business men of the county. During war times he lived for awhile in town. He was a particular friend of J. B. Shaw, who for a long time was the leading hardware merchant in the county. A family of eight children survive, all except two, Harvey Campbell and Mrs. Isaac Holt, being residents still of Marion township. Mrs. Holt lives in Nebraska having removed there about a year ago, and Harvey lives in Villisca, of this state. Mr. Hugh Campbell gave each of his children a farm of 1601 [1001?] acres of land, generally we believe as a marriage present, and with the exception of Mrs. Holt and the brother Harvey, the children all reside on the farms given them. Up to a short time before her death Mrs. Campbell enjoyed a good degree of health. Her funeral was held at Hickory Grove Chapel on Sunday April 29, and was very largely attended by the people of Marion, most of them having known Mrs. Campbell from their childhood. By request of deceased, Rev. L. T. Rowley of Salem conducted the services. Of the deceased it may truthfully be said, that having faithfully served her family and kindred, she rests from her labors and leaves to her children the richest legacy that mortals are permitted to leave, the memory of an industrious, upright and cheerful life.
