February 9, 1922
James H. Gideon was born in Knox County, Tenn., on the fourteeth day of April, 1845, and died at Winfield, Iowa on the fourth day of Febuary, 1922, at the ripe age of 76 years, 9 months and 20 days.
On the 16th day of July,1876 he was united in marriage to Mary M. Byerley. Three children were born to this union, Mrs. Noda Wise and Mrs Roxanna Honts, of Winfield and Walter who died in early childhood.
The deceased, togeter with his family, moved to Iowa in 1888, settling at Crawfordsville where they remained for about five years. In 1894 they moved to Winfield where he made his home until death called him.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, two daughters, six gradchildren and five great grandchildren. His long years in Winfield made many close friends for him who are shocked becouse of the suddenness of his death, and mourn the loss of a friend. The children and grandchildren have lost a devoted father. One who loved them and they in turn have shown their devotion in loving care during the declining days of his life. They mourn but not as those who have no hope for they look forward to meeting him on the evergreen shore. There to be reunited.
The course of my long life reached at last. In fragle bark o'er tempestuous sea. The common harbor where must rendered be. Account of all actions of the past (Longfellow).
The funeral was held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Chas. Wise, Sunday afternoon, Feb. 5, at 2 o'clock. Rev. Hauter officiating before a goodly number of friends and neighbors. Interment in the Winfield Cemetery.
During the years that the deceased has lived in our city he has proved to be an honest reliable citizen and extremely industrious, cotinuing his labor after reaching an age that bars all but the most resolute Men. His has been a useful life and his energies have been ever directed toward the betterment of others, and in this his kindred were ever the object of his kindest care. After long eventful years he rests the reward so well earned jusring his earthly pilgimage.
