James "Jim" Ivan Rose, 79, of Mount Pleasant died Tuesday, March 6, 2007.

Born Sept. 30, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, he was the son of Ivan and Marjorie Stubbs Rose. He married Mary Sue Hoaglin in 1973. They later divorced.

His family moved to Iowa City in 1928. He was a 1945 graduate of Iowa City High School and attended the University of Iowa from 1945 to 1948 where he wrote for the Daily Iowan. He wrote sports and other news for the Monticello Express from September 1948 until he became sports editor of the Mount Pleasant News on Feb. 2, 1949. He served in this capacity for 42 years, semi–retiring in 1991. After retirement, he continued to write his column "Sports Through Rose Colored Glasses" until his death. He received numerous writing awards including the Iowa High School Athletic Association Media Award in 1990 at the state boys basketball tournament in Des Moines.

He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes, Mount Pleasant High School, Iowa Wesleyan College and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was a longtime golfer whose lowest round at the Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club was a 35. He belonged to the club since 1953. He had his only hole–in–one in 1953 on No. 3.

Survivors include two sisters, Marilyn Curnow of Postville and Patricia Duffy of Iowa City; one brother, David Rose of Brighton, Colo.; and special friends Libby Kerr, Gayle Rupp, and Linda and Terry Stith, all of Mount Pleasant.

The body was cremated. Cremation Society of Eastern Central Western Iowa has assisted the family.

A memorial for Mr. Rose will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club.
